At this point I leave the bottom hole open. I modeled my Captain Underpants after the book version,
which has black lines on his underwear. The movie version does not, they use a white lined underwear.
To make the black lines, I used Red Heart Black Yarn. I pulled it up through the hole in the bottom and
then used a back stitch to make double rings around the legs (see below). Then added the lines around
the crotch and the waistband. Then I also added a mouth, nose, eyes, eyebrows and nipples. The stitching is
tedious, but it does give it the book version feel. Here is a good reference for the backstitch.

Turn, hdc across. Chain 1.
Turn (sc, triple crochet increase, sc, slip stitch, slip stitch) repeat until end of the cape, I like to do a triple
crochet increase on the last stitch, just to make it end on a ruffle.
Finish Off

Now you will move back up to the corner of the top of the cape.  This is where you will make the tie that goes around his neck. Rejoin the yarn to the corner, then chain 21.  Sc into second chain from hook and all the way back to the cape.  Slip stitch back into the cape when you reach it.  Repeat on other side.  I leave a long tail so that I can sew down the ties on the cape so that it stays in place.

Assembly is pretty straightforward.  Add legs, arms, ears and the cape.  Tra-La-La  You are finished.  Enjoy Captain Underpants.  If you have any questions feel free to email me at kristenmtg@gmail.com

Thanks!!

  1. He looks great! Could you tell me how tall your Captain Underpants ended up being? Just want to get a rough idea before I get started!

  4. What row are the arms added? I prefer crocheting them on rather than sewing them later.

  7. Has anyone made him? Sandra, above, says there are errors in the pattern. Have they been corrected? I would like to make him, but as a beginner, I want to start with a correct pattern.
